General Information
The defense system of Ibiza has a total of 7 watchtowers located on the coast and several Church Watchtowers and Houses of defense. Their construction can be divided into two phases.
The first phase was the attacks of the Turks and the Barbarians to Barbarossa (Khair ed-Din) and lasted from the 16. Century until the 17. Century.
They include the:
- Torre des Carregador
- Torre de Ses Portes
- Torre del Puig de Missa
- Torre Iglesia de Sant Antoni
and several Houses of defense.
The second phase was the attacks of the Dutch, British and French in the 18. Century.
They include the:
- Torre d´en Rovira
- Torre d´en Valls
- Torre des Savinar
- Torre des Molar
- Torre de Portinatx
and several Church Watchtowers and Houses of defense.
In the few populated areas of the island since the 15. Century watchtowers were integrated into houses to be able to retire at risk therein can. Master was mostly the Mallorcan Joan Ballester de Zafra. Under the reign of Charles III. from Spain the network of watchtowers was extended in the 18. Century.
The principle of the early warning system is no different from the two neighboring islands of Mallorca and Menorca.
